What the heck is Lean Six Sigma?
As I embark on my Lean Six Sigma Black Belt journey, I thought I’d take a moment to share a little about LSS in case you’re wondering (and don’t feel like Googling).
Here’s the high-level Coles Notes version:
Let’s break it down.
☞ Lean is a process improvement method that focuses on increasing efficiency and reducing waste. It’s all about streamlining processes and removing any steps that don’t add value for the customer. By focusing on the customer experience and streamlining processes, Lean helps organizations to work smarter and more effectively, which can lead to increased customer satisfaction and higher profits. By eliminating waste, organizations can reduce cycle times and improve overall efficiency.↗️
Sounds like a win / win, right? It gets better.
☞ Six Sigma, on the other hand, is a quality management system that relies on data analysis 📈 to eliminate defects and improve processes. It helps organizations identify their most critical metrics and use data to make meaningful improvements to their business or processes. Six Sigma focuses on using data analysis to reduce defects, enhance processes, and identify key performance indicators that help organizations make real improvements to their business.
Think trimming the fat of any non-value add activity, step, or tool that doesn’t get your organization closer to the end goal.
By combining Lean and Six Sigma, organizations can achieve their goals more effectively. It’s like having two powerful engines working together to propel a car forward: the Lean engine provides the speed and agility to navigate the road, while the Six Sigma engine focuses on the quality of the ride.
Together, they can achieve powerful results.
Let’s look at two examples to see the power of Lean Six Sigma in action:
🍔 A fast-food restaurant with long lines and slow service. With Lean Six Sigma, they could streamline their ordering process, reducing wait times and improving overall customer satisfaction. This leads to increased customer loyalty and repeat business, resulting in a boost to the bottom line. Cha-ching!
🚀 A complex aerospace design process with multiple steps and departments. By using Lean Six Sigma, they could identify and eliminate waste, streamline communication between departments, and improve the speed and efficiency of the design process.
The result? A more efficient design process, with a higher likelihood of meeting tight deadlines and delivering a high-quality product that meets customer needs while also ensuring the opportunity for a defect to be near zero (pretty important).
Lean Six Sigma has become a crucial part of many successful organizations, transforming their operations and leading to greater success.
I’m so excited to bring you along on my journey as I work through my Black Belt certification!
Is your organization taking advantage of this powerful methodology?
